CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Karla chuckled as she found herself standing by the window, watching for Sawyer. Just like she had in the past. The feeling was only dampened by the phone call she’d had with her lawyer earlier.

He’d told her that the letter had been important, and she’d needed to sign and date it in front of a notary or in his office so the final divorce could be finalized. Worse, he’d told her anything with the court took time, so she shouldn’t expect to see another copy of it for a long while.

At least she was close. She’d waited the full year and Rob lived far away. They weren’t getting back together, ever. Catzilla rubbed against her calf and purred only enough to make her question if he’d actually made a noise at all.

Sawyer pulled up and headed for the house. She caught his glance through the window and he smiled at her, making her chest flutter like pop rocks. She opened the door for him and a wave of heat from outside washed over her.

“Come on in. Amelia offered to watch the desk tonight to make up for her earlier mistake with the bell, so I’m off the hook.” She’d turned the alarm on anyway, just in case, since she still wasn’t sure she could trust Amelia.

“Didn’t you say she may have stolen your divorce papers? Why are you keeping her around if you can’t trust her? Especially with your business.”

She shrugged a shoulder and ignored his tone. That was just Sawyer. He cared about her and her business and didn’t want to see anyone take advantage of her. He’d proven that last fall when he’d managed the construction on her addition.

“I don’t trust her yet, but I’m worried about her. She’s pregnant and can’t find other work.”

“Maybe they know something you don’t. What about her employment history?” He followed her to the kitchen and chuckled at the sight of the cat door.

“I didn’t get her history. She’s working for cash because she has no documentation with her.” The more Karla spoke, the more uneasy she felt about the situation, but she would also argue that there was a reason to keep Amelia beyond the odious task of firing someone.

“Wait. . . Are you telling me she’s working for you for cash? Karla, I totally understand that you want to help this girl, but you have no protection if she would do anything. You don’t even know if she’s using her real name.”

Karla laid a hand on his arm to stop him because she knew those things and was actually glad he cared enough to say them. “I know. Her behavior is strange. I’m hoping that with a little more time, she’ll trust me and tell me why she took the paperwork. There’s no reason for her to do it. Believe it or not, your questions helped me decide that. Thank you.”

He took her hands in his and looked her over nice and slow until her cheeks heated and she couldn’t maintain her focus.
